Abstract
Hydraulic jump plays a vital role in the design of structures such as still pools and trapezoidal channels. This study investigates the effect of equilateral triangular barriers on the hydraulic jump characteristics and flow depth distribution in trapezoidal channels. Triangular barriers with heights of 2, 3 and 4 cm were arranged at a distance of 1 to 4 cm from each other in a zigzag pattern. The results showed that the 4 cm high barriers reduced the conjugate depth by 28% at the optimum distance of 4 cm. The hydraulic jump length was shortened by 35 to 50%, while the zigzag arrangement reduced the flow turbulence by 15% and the jump length by another 18% at an S/B ratio of 0.3. The energy dissipation was improved by 22% and the hydraulic resistance increased by 12%, resulting in a 20% more uniform energy distribution.
